The Dean of the School of Engineering and the Director of MIT Lincoln Laboratory are pleased to announce the appointment of Robert T-I. Shin as Director of the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Beaver Works Center, and as a member of the MIT School of Engineering Extended Engineering Council, effective Feb. 1.

Beaver Works is a joint center established by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and MIT School of Engineering. The facility is open to all MIT students, faculty, researchers, and Lincoln Laboratory staff, and it provides a center for innovation, collaboration, and hands-on development. This collaborative venture provides opportunities to make an impact on pressing global problems through research, innovation, prototyping, and education in engineering and science by leveraging synergies between MIT campus research and Lincoln Laboratory technology development. The facility is located at 300 Technology Square in Cambridge, next to the MIT campus.

Shin is the division head of the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Tactical Systems Division at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He joined Lincoln Laboratory in 1984, and his early research focused on the application of electromagnetics to various air defense problems. He is widely recognized as a national expert in radar cross-section measurement and for his work on prediction techniques and air defense systems. Shin has provided many independent assessments of major U.S. Air Force programs, and he served on the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board from 2006 to 2010. Shin was a research affiliate member of the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics from 1984 to 2000. He has supervised over 20 graduate theses, published over 150 refereed journal articles and conference papers, and co-authored Theory of Microwave Remote Sensing (Wiley, 1985). Shin holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from MIT.
