The MIT Forum for Supply Chain Innovation has announced that Rob McEwen, chairman of McEwen Mining, will speak at the Forum’s Nov. 12 conference, “Big Data in Manufacturing,” held at the Cambridge Marriott.
In his presentation, “Big Data and Breakthrough Leadership: The Goldcorp Challenge,” McEwen will discuss how attending an MIT program in 1999 led to a breakthrough business idea: publicly sharing the company’s data and issuing a challenge to crowdsource the company’s next gold strike.
“There is a great sense of symmetry in coming back to MIT to share the story of how using big data and decision science in an innovative and collaborative way led to a breakthrough in the mining industry,” says McEwen, who is also an XPRIZE trustee and founder and former CEO of Goldcorp, Inc.
This one-day executive conference, hosted with the Accenture and MIT Alliance in Business Analytics, focuses on the effect of big data and decision science on the future of innovation and leadership in manufacturing and retailing. MIT professor David Simchi-Levi, founder of the Forum and co-chair of the Accenture and MIT Alliance, says, “We are very pleased to have Rob McEwen back at MIT to share his insights on big data and disruptive innovation.”
Narendra Mulani, senior managing director of Accenture Analytics and co-chair of the Accenture and MIT Alliance, says, “When looking for ways to turn big data into big outcomes, businesses can benefit greatly from teaming up with academia. We’re excited to discuss some of the key success factors of such a successful collaboration.”
