Shirley McBay, founder of the Public Service Center, will return to campus on Tuesday, Nov. 18 to help celebrate the center's 15th anniversary.
The festivities will take place in lobbies 10 and 13 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The event will showcase the Public Service Center from its beginnings, when it focused primarily on the Cambridge Public Schools, to the present.
Programs celebrated in exhibits include Service Learning, which integrates challenging community service projects with academic classes for applied learning and public service; iMATH, an after-school program for eighth-graders; CommuniTech, which trains needy families in computer skills and gives them refurbished computers; IDEAS, a competition in which MIT students create designs and products that meet community needs; and SciPro, a program that matches minority teenagers with MIT mentors.
McBay, the dean for student affairs from 1980-90, and President Charles M. Vest will speak at 4 p.m. in the Bush Room. Priscilla Gray, Professor Emeritus Robert Mann and Professor John Kassakian, director of the Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems, will be honored for their support of the Public Service Center. Refreshments will be served.
