Three MIT researchers are among the recipients of 16 Department of Defense (DOD) research grants totalling $8.75 million.
The grants will be made under the fiscal 2001 DOD Defense Research Initiative on NanoTechnology program (DURINT), which addresses large multidisciplinary nanotechnology topics representing exceptional opportunities for future DOD applications and technology options, according to the DOD.
The researchers -- Subra Suresh, department head and professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Mary C. Boyce, professor of mechanical engineering; and Terry Orlando, professor of electrical engineering and computer science -- will receive Air Force or Navy grants to study subjects such as deformation, fatigue and fracture of interfacial materials; polymeric nanocomposites; and quantum computing with quantum devices.
The average award will be $1 million per year over three years. The 16 research awards will provide long-term support for research, graduate students and equipment.
The MIT proposals were selected from a field of 95, which in turn were selected from 334 white papers received by the DOD.
